A team from the University of Michigan Medical School, Stony Brook University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago worked together on the study, which used specialized brain-scanning technology and a simulated online dating scenario. During physical pain, our brains release opioids to dampen pain signals. All participants viewed photos and profiles of hundreds of other adults in a simulated online dating scenario. Each person then selected profiles of the people they were most interested in romantically.

PET scans made during these moments of rejection showed both the amount and location of opioid release, measured by looking at the availability of mu-opioid receptors on brain cells. When participants were informed that the people they chose liked them back, both the depressed and non-depressed individuals reported feeling happy and accepted. However, the positive feeling in depressed individuals disappeared quickly after the period of social acceptance had ended, and may be related to altered opioid responses, he noted.

Only the non-depressed people went on to report feeling motivated to connect socially with other people, according to the researchers. Many younger men appreciate the wisdom, intelligence, reponsibility and maturity an older woman brings to the relationship.

Most younger men in this study, preferred to date years older than their own age. You underestimate how many younger men are tired of the games women their age play. Again, there are exceptions, but relying on it is a risky proposition, to say the least. I am sure that Beyonce and Sophia Vergara will look great at 50 or even older, but this cannot be said about most women out there. Plenty of older women married to much younger men. Sometimes I am more available than others.

More importantly — not every woman has the same goal. I am sad to know that many older women are in denial about the fact that a big age difference is a virtually insurmountable obstacle as far as long term relationship goes. Their relationships are clearly ALL doomed to fail. Regardless of who is coming to whom, those types of relationships are doomed as far as long term goes, so the only way to enjoy them is to accept and embrace the fact that you should enjoy what you have while you have it without making too many long term plans.

Or perhaps we met once, didn’t have a great date and thought it was OK to politely go our separate ways, only to find that the other person thought a trip to Paris and marriage was on tap for the next date. But back to the hurt feelings. A couple of years ago, when I was dealing with a fair amount of family “stuff,” I had to postpone a scheduled first date sort of at the last minute. We are tired of confessing the same sins over and over again with little or no perceived progress. This would be wrong, however, since we are absolved of those sins and forgiven by Our Lord.
