Shown here are fire years recorded by a single tree in central Pennsylvania. The model focuses on two variables – temperature and precipitation – to understand how climate drives wildfire across the world. How does climate constrain fire and can we predict it? We started thinking about the physics and chemistry involved in starting a single wildfire and relating that over time.
The next step was moving away from the places where we have validation data and looking at what the model predicted for all temperature and precipitation combinations. We aren’t necessarily interested in where those climate conditions are, but, rather, what does the model say about how frequent wildfires are expected to be in that setting? Fire scars are used as a measure of when and how frequent fires occurred over long time periods.
While wildfires can’t be fully prevented, the model can be used understand climate’s influence on wildfire probability and where and why it changes across different regions. Old fire scarred trees provide the data on past fire frequency. Pictured below are fire scars on trees from throughout the eastern U. We started to think of ways in which the model could be used to explore the chemistry of wildfires since fire is fundamentally a chemical reaction.

Users can select current fire perimeters or display past fires dating back to The system also has the capability to show if previous fires were natural or human caused, and the size of the fire in acres. Fire perimeter data are updated daily based on input from incident intelligence sources, GPS data and IR imagery from fixed wing and satellite platforms.
The GeoMAC website allows users to manipulate map information displays, zoom in and out to show fire information at various scales and detail, including downloading desired perimeter data. The fire maps also have relational databases so that the user can display current information on individual fires such as name of the fire, current acreage, and other fire status information with just the click of a mouse.
